It had become easier to talk to Ms. Kelsey. She was a strong-willed and strong-minded black woman. Never did she come off as judgmental, but instead, she exhumed care and compassion.
Learning about her center for sexual abuse victims, Monica decided to give it a shot. After releasing Monica into Ms. Kelsey’s care, Faye visited her daughter every weekend in order to make sure she was improving and coming to terms with her situation.
This particular weekend, Faye came with two surprises that she didn’t really know how Monica would react to them. After going over the current events with Ms. Kelsey, it was mutually agreed upon that Monica had to be made aware of what was taking place and get her reaction in order to know if progress was truly being made.
Seated outside in the illuminating sun, Monica awaited the usual arrival of her mother at a picnic table. As the cool breeze of the midafternoon air settled, she saw her beautiful mother approaching in the distance with a familiar face. Rising to her feet, Monica raced over into Ursula’s open arms and smiling face.
“Girrrrrrrrl, I’ve missed you so much,” Ursula admitted.
“Me too,” Monica replied.
Faye smiled and hugged her loving child as well. “I will let you two catch up. I’ll be over her with Ms. Kelsey,” Faye assured her.
Monica was so happy to see her friend that she could careless. Ursula sat with Monica at the picnic table holding her close.
“I’m so sorry, Ursula,” Monica admitted with a sad expression on her face.
“Sorry for what?”
“For not listening to you. If I had of listened to you in the very beginning, then none of this would have ever happened.”
Ursula couldn’t believe her ears. “Monica, you don’t ever have to apologize for what happened to you! It took me damn near thirty years to figure that it wasn’t my fault.”
Monica studied Ursula as she continued.
“As a child, I was molested by my uncle and mistreated by men so much that I just got used to it. I felt that I was simply placed on this planet to be misused. For some strange reason, I told myself that I deserved every form of sexual abuse I received because God was punishing me, and his punishments were always justified,” Ursula explained.
Monica reached out to hold her hand, hearing her own rationalization within her words.
“I was blinded by Satan’s deception, Monica. I wasn’t receiving God’s punishment. I was receiving his guidance and strength. I had to wake up to the fact that there are good and bad people in this world based on the free will that God gave us all.
“God didn’t punish me by allowing those men to violate me. He simply allowed life to run its course. By experiencing those pains, I became a much stronger, wiser woman with a testimony to share with so many others like me, so many others like you,” she reasoned through tear-stained cheeks.
Monica squeezed her friend tight with a loving embrace. “I never knew,” she said.
“It’s alright.
